Established in 2006, the award-winning charity Outside In helps artists who encounter barriers to accessing the art world like health, disability, social circumstances, and isolation.

The National Open exhibitions showcase diverse and high-quality works by artists often excluded from mainstream art. These exhibitions offer artists the chance to be recognised by judges, with the first prize being a solo show. For instance, in the 2023 exhibition “Humanity,” judged by Bob and Roberta Smith, Michelle Roberts won the first prize and will have her solo show at De La Warr Pavilion in September 2024.

“Shelter” is the seventh National Open exhibition.
