Vivid Sydney 2014 launched its program this week. Now in its sixth year the annual festival of light and ideas has become more international than ever.
Part of its expansionist vision has been to take the event beyond the harbour’s confines, turning to Redfern’s Carriageworks for a three concerts by electronic music legends the Pet Shop Boys (limited to 1500 people each night).
Part of a new event curated by Creative Director Steven Pavlovic with the title Modulations, this is more than just a music performance. With art, installations, DJs, industry talks, and innovative food, intersecting, influencing and overlapping sectors, it is a veritable creative mosh pit.
This is the only Australian performance of the Pet Shop Boys 2013/14 Electric world tour, a multi-media concert designed by acclaimed Creative Director Es Devlin, whose fame – apart from working with Lady GaGa, Kanye West, and Jay Z – is to have designed the 2012 London Olympic Games Closing Ceremony.

Incorporating film, lasers, choreography and wild costumes, book early for this immersive and intimate experience with the boys. Pavlovic said of the event: ‘Modulations is a one-of-a-kind event that has been designed to celebrate creativity across multiple art forms, and Vivid Sydney is the perfect way to showcase this work.’
He added, ‘This is not a traditional arts program, nor is it a traditional music program.’ Simply it is all those modulations.
Sydney and Darling Harbours will remain the focus of the event of the 18-day period with light installations and projections. Part of Vivid Live, the Sydney Opera House will present exclusive performances by the Pixies, Giorgio Moroder and a collaboration between the Presets and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Vivid is the Southern hemisphere’s largest festival of light and music. It will be held from 23 May to 9 June. Vivid Sydney is owned and managed by Destination NSW.
