Suhair Khan is lead at Google Arts and Culture, which has put the collections of 1,800 cultural institutions online.

1) How do you explain what you do to your parents?

I work with museums and cultural institutions around the world to bring stories of their collections, artworks, and archives online. My role covers various countries and regions and lots of different types of partners (historical archives, fashion foundations, science museums, design festivals), so thinking creatively about how technology can be used to provide new windows into these incredible worlds whilst being sensitive to context is what I do day to day.

2) How did you get your start in your career?

I’ve been with Google for eight years now. I began at Google HQ in Mountain View California, before moving to Singapore and am now in London. Before Google, I had a shorter career in investment banking and did my Masters in international development. Art has always been a huge part of my life – my mum runs an art gallery, my sister is a curator, and so on. I can’t quite remember how it all began – so long ago now!

3) What is the biggest misconception about working in digital arts?

Technology is now part of artistic practice and extends deep into both physical experiences in museums and public spaces – not just online. But also, the technology can be used as a tool for access and sharing, without compromising creativity.

4) In an interview for your own job what would you be looking for?

Creativity, curiosity, passion and an understanding of current movements in technology and the arts.

5) What’s the best thing happening in digital arts at the moment?

So much is happening, but I am excited by the role that technology like artificial intelligence can play in creating new forms of art and in allowing artists to challenge their own practices.
