Exit with grace

What do you do when you get a new job? Flip your boss the bird and cartwheel out of the office?

While that may be tempting, it’s probably not a good idea, especially in a small, close-knit sector like the arts. Those that take a can of gasoline to the bridges they’ve wandered over the past couple of years may very well find the flames licking their fingers.

When exiting stage right, make sure that you do it with grace. Don’t rub it in the face of co-workers you’ve left behind, because who knows where they’re going to move and what they can bring to your future if they remain in your network.

Be sure to give the amount of notice stipulated in company policy and volunteer to help train your replacement. Don’t leave any unfinished projects if possible and tie up any loose ends. Also work as hard as you normally would up until your last day.

People will remember.
