Job Description

Theatre@41 is York’s leading independent community theatre. Located in the centre of York and run entirely by volunteers, the theatre’s mission is to provide a flexible, affordable and quality performing arts space for all. The Theatre is run by a small hands-on Executive Committee who have run the theatre on a volunteer basis since 2020. The new role of Theatre Manager will take on many of the tasks the Executive Committee currently perform, while leading on the next phase of Theatre@41s development.

We’re looking for someone who can manage the day-to-day operations of the theatre, from programming and bookings, to supporting hirers and ensuring the building is fit for use. You’ll be working closely with the committee and volunteers to ensure performers, classes and audiences have a great experience. You’ll have excellent communication and organisational skills, a practical and proactive mind and, of course, a passion for the performing arts in all their forms.

The Theatre Manager is integral in creating and fostering a positive and supportive atmosphere for visiting companies and York’s thriving amateur theatre scene. As well as holding overall responsibility for day-to-day operations, the Theatre Manager manages and coordinates the theatre’s programming and marketing strategy.

In line with the Theatre@41’s aims, this role provides an opportunity for the holder to gain experience in the management of a venue, and to learn about all aspects of theatre operation.

12-month contract, Part-Time (20 hours per week), £14,404 (Real Living Wage)

You’ll be our first ever employee. We’ve started at the real living wage. We will review the salary level after three months and are open to an increase if everything is going well.

Job Requirements

Essential:

  • Experience of paid or appropriate voluntary work in a Theatre venue.

  • An appreciation of the unique nature of Theatre@41s volunteer-centric but professional operation.

  • Excellent organisational skills with a high level of attention to detail and ability to plan and effectively work on multiple projects concurrently.

  • A fast learner who is able to pick up new skills quickly and use initiative.

  • Dedication to the role, with a hardworking and can-do attitude.

  • Personable, and able to work effectively within the small dedicated team.

  • Ability to communicate effectively and maintain good relationships with external groups and support incoming productions in a friendly and creative manner.

  • A proven passion for the arts.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (including an excellent standard of spoken and written English).

  • Excellent ICT skills.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with the Executive committee to support the day-to-day operation of Theatre@41, including room hire, the Bar, Box Office, and general administration and finance.
  • Provides assistance to productions hiring the Theatre, this will sometimes include assisting companies on stage during get-ins and get-outs.
  • Facilitate the programming and marketing of a varied, high quality and marketable professional programme at Theatre@41.
  • Contribute to the strategic direction of the theatre.
  • Acts as an ambassador for the Theatre@41 to the wider community, and beyond.
