Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen at the British Museum within our Legal Services and Information Governance department for a Records Manager who can proactively drive and implement compliance in the area of Records Management.

The Records Manager will assist the Head of Information Governance in ensuring implementation of the Museum’s Information Governance strategy Museum-wide and more specifically ensure compliance with records management related legislation, standards, and frameworks.

The main purpose of this role is to develop and deliver effective records management practices and solutions, implement and maintain the Museum’s records management framework, and provide specialist records management advice, knowledge and support to the Museum.

Job Requirements

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Good working knowledge of freedom of information law and legislation forming the legal framework of information management (e.g., Public Records Act 1958, Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act 1988).
  • Demonstrable experience of working in an information management or records management environment, experience in dealing with large volumes of electronic and non-electronic information.
  • Experience developing and implementing records management policies, reports, operating procedures and guidance.
  • Excellent organisation and planning skills to co-ordinate and manage numerous workstreams simultaneously with confidence; work to strict deadlines; prioritise workloads; and to identify and escalate risk.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, stakeholder and change management skills.

Job Responsibilities

  • Work with the Head of Information Governance to establish a new records management framework, including the delivery of new policies, standards, procedures and supporting guidance.
  • To review Museum practices to provide staff with professional advice and guidance on the opportunities and risks associated with the management of paper and digital records.
  • To enable informed decision-making and ensure that senior staff are kept informed of current and projected strategic, operational, legislative and regulatory issues relating to records management.
  • To further develop, maintain and manage the Museum’s Information Asset Register ensuring key individuals from across the organisation are properly advised of their responsibilities as information asset owners.
